When a publicly traded company announces a stock split, shareholders often wonder how the corporate action affects their portfolio value. Whether a firm executes a traditional forward stock split (to lower per-share prices and increase liquidity) or a reverse stock split (to raise per-share prices and maintain exchange listing requirements), total market capitalization remains unchanged.

Our free Stock Split Calculator computes your exact post-split share count, adjusted share price, and total position market value across any forward or reverse split ratio.

How to Calculate Forward & Reverse Stock Splits

Stock splits adjust share counts and share prices proportionally so that total position market value remains identical before and after the event.

Forward Stock Split Formula (Ratio A : B, e.g., 4:1):

New Share Count = Original Shares × ( A / B )

New Share Price = Original Share Price / ( A / B )

Reverse Stock Split Formula (Ratio 1 : N, e.g., 1:10):

New Share Count = Original Shares / N

New Share Price = Original Share Price × N

Step-by-Step 4-for-1 Forward Split Example

Suppose an investor holds 100 shares of stock priced at $200.00 per share ($20,000 total market value). The board of directors executes a 4-for-1 forward stock split (4:1 ratio).

Let’s calculate the post-split share count, share price, and total position value:

New Share Count = 100 shares × (4 / 1) = 400 shares

New Share Price = $200.00 / (4 / 1) = $50.00 per share

Total Position Value = 400 shares × $50.00 = $20,000.00

Split Stage Share Count Price Per Share Total Position Market Value
Pre-Split Position 100 shares $200.00 / share $20,000.00
4-for-1 Forward Split Action Multiplied by 4x Divided by 4x Market Value Neutral
Post-Split Position 400 shares $50.00 / share $20,000.00 Total Value

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does a stock split create free money for investors?

No. A stock split is like cutting a 12-inch pizza into 8 slices instead of 4 slices; you have more pieces, but the total amount of pizza is unchanged. Your total dollar portfolio value remains identical immediately before and after the split.

What is a reverse stock split and why do companies use it?

A reverse stock split consolidates shares to increase per-share stock price (e.g., a 1-for-10 reverse split turns 1,000 $0.50 shares into 100 $5.00 shares). Companies use reverse splits primarily to raise share prices above minimum exchange bid requirements (e.g., NASDAQ’s $1.00 minimum rule) to prevent delisting.

Are stock splits taxable events?

In most tax jurisdictions (including the U.S. IRS), a standard stock split is a non-taxable event because your total cost basis remains unchanged—it is simply allocated across a different number of shares.
