The Double Discount Calculator helps shoppers, wholesale buyers, and retailers calculate final prices when applying two or more sequential percentage discounts (stacked discounts) to an item’s original retail price. Uncover exact dollar savings and effective total percentage off.

The Double Discount Formula

Sequential double discounts apply the second percentage reduction to the already discounted price resulting from the first reduction:

Price After First Discount = Original Price × ( 1 - ( Discount 1 % / 100 ) )

Final Price After Second Discount = Price After First Discount × ( 1 - ( Discount 2 % / 100 ) )

Effective Total Discount % = 100 × [ 1 - ( ( 1 - ( Discount 1 % / 100 ) ) × ( 1 - ( Discount 2 % / 100 ) ) ) ]

Where:

  • Discount 1 %: Primary sale or promotional percentage discount (e.g., 30% off clearance).
  • Discount 2 %: Secondary stacked discount percentage (e.g., extra 20% off coupon code).
  • Effective Discount %: The true single percentage discount equivalent to combining both stacked discounts.

Double Discount Combination Benchmarks

Compare final prices and effective total percentage off for a $100 original price across common stacked discount pairs:

First Discount % Second Discount % Effective Overall Discount % Final Price on $100 Item Total Dollar Savings
10% Off 10% Off 19.00% Total Off $81.00 $19.00 Saved
20% Off 15% Off 32.00% Total Off $68.00 $32.00 Saved
30% Off 20% Off 44.00% Total Off $56.00 $44.00 Saved
50% Off 20% Off 60.00% Total Off $40.00 $60.00 Saved
50% Off 50% Off 75.00% Total Off $25.00 $75.00 Saved

Step-by-Step Double Discount Calculation Example

Here is an example calculating final price for a $150 designer jacket marked down by 40% with an additional 25% store card coupon:

  1. Apply First Discount (40% Off): $150 × (1 - 0.40) = $90.00 ($60 saved).
  2. Apply Second Discount (25% Off): $90 × (1 - 0.25) = $67.50 ($22.50 additional saved).
  3. Calculate Total Dollar Savings: $150 - $67.50 = $82.50 total saved.
  4. Calculate Effective Overall Discount Rate: ($82.50 / $150) × 100 = 55.00% effective discount.
  5. Result: The final price is $67.50 (equivalent to a single 55% discount).

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the order of double discounts matter?

No. Mathematically, applying a 30% discount followed by a 20% discount produces the exact same final price as applying a 20% discount followed by a 30% discount (Multiplicative Commutativity: 0.70 × 0.80 = 0.56).

Why isn’t 20% off plus 20% off equal to 40% off?

Because the second 20% discount is applied to the reduced 80% price, not the original 100% price. Taking 20% off of 80% reduces the price by another 16%, resulting in an effective 36% overall discount.

How do triple discounts work?

Triple discounts follow the same sequential multiplication: Final Price = Original × (1 - d1) × (1 - d2) × (1 - d3).

Can sales tax be applied before double discounts?

No. Retail sales tax is legally calculated on the final net discounted price after all promotional discounts and coupon codes are applied.
