The Margin and Sales Tax Calculator enables retailers, e-commerce store owners, and wholesalers to calculate selling prices, gross profit margins, dollar profit, and local sales tax additions. Compute both net selling prices and final tax-inclusive customer checkout prices.

The Margin & Sales Tax Formulas

Retail pricing formulas convert product cost (COGS) into net selling price based on target gross profit margin, then add sales tax:

Net Selling Price (Excl. Tax) = Cost of Goods Sold / ( 1 - ( Target Gross Margin % / 100 ) )

Gross Profit ($) = Net Selling Price - Cost of Goods Sold

Sales Tax Amount ($) = Net Selling Price × ( Sales Tax Rate % / 100 )

Total Customer Price (Incl. Tax) = Net Selling Price + Sales Tax Amount

Where:

  • Cost of Goods Sold (COGS): Direct wholesale cost to acquire or manufacture the product.
  • Target Gross Margin (%): Desired gross profit percentage relative to net revenue (Gross Profit / Net Revenue).
  • Sales Tax Rate (%): Municipal and state retail sales tax rate collected at checkout.

Retail Pricing Benchmarks by Target Margin & Tax

Compare net selling prices, gross profit dollars, sales tax, and total customer prices for an item costing $50.00 COGS (assuming 8.00% sales tax):

Target Gross Margin % Net Selling Price (Excl. Tax) Gross Profit ($) Sales Tax @ 8.00% Total Customer Checkout Price
20% Gross Margin $62.50 $12.50 $5.00 $67.50
35% Gross Margin $76.92 $26.92 $6.15 $83.07
50% Gross Margin (Keystone) $100.00 $50.00 $8.00 $108.00
60% Gross Margin $125.00 $75.00 $10.00 $135.00

Step-by-Step Margin & Sales Tax Calculation Example

Here is an example calculating selling price and sales tax for a product with $30.00 COGS, a target 40% gross profit margin, and 7.00% sales tax:

  1. Calculate Net Selling Price: $30.00 / ( 1 - 0.40 ) = $30.00 / 0.60 = $50.00 net price.
  2. Calculate Gross Profit Dollar Amount: $50.00 - $30.00 = $20.00 gross profit.
  3. Calculate Sales Tax Collected: $50.00 × 0.07 = $3.50 sales tax.
  4. Compute Total Customer Price: $50.00 + $3.50 = $53.50 total price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sales tax included in profit margin calculations?

No. Sales tax is a fiduciary pass-through liability collected on behalf of state governments. It must be excluded from gross revenue and profit margin calculations.

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Gross Margin measures profit as a percentage of selling price (Profit / Price). Markup measures profit as a percentage of wholesale cost (Profit / Cost).

What is “Keystone Pricing”?

Keystone pricing is a traditional retail pricing rule of thumb where an item’s selling price is set at exactly 200% of its wholesale cost, producing a 50% gross profit margin (100% markup).

How do I extract net revenue from a tax-inclusive total price?

To extract net revenue from a tax-inclusive total: Net Revenue = Tax-Inclusive Total / ( 1 + ( Sales Tax Rate / 100 ) ).
