The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Calculator (SSY Calculator) is a specialized savings tool designed for parents and legal guardians of a girl child to estimate maturity returns under the Ministry of Finance’s Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative. SSY offers one of the highest government-backed interest rates in India, coupled with EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) tax status under Section 80C.

With a deposit window of 15 years and a final maturity tenure of 21 years, this calculator projects total compound capital accumulated for higher education or marriage expenses.

The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Calculation Formula

SSY operates on a 15-year deposit window followed by a 6-year holding period where interest continues to compound annually until 21-year maturity:

1. Key Scheme Parameters

  • Eligibility: Account opened in the name of a girl child below 10 years of age.
  • Deposit Period: Mandatory annual deposits for 15 years from account opening.
  • Maturity Period: Account matures 21 years from the date of opening.
  • Current Interest Rate: 8.2% per annum (compounded annually).
  • Annual Limits: Minimum deposit ₹250; Maximum deposit ₹150,000 per financial year.

2. Compound Interest Math

Maturity Corpus (FV) = Σ [ Annual Deposit * (1 + Interest Rate)^Compounding Years ]

Step-by-Step Sukanya Samriddhi Calculation Example

A parent opens an SSY account for their 1-year-old daughter, depositing the maximum allowable ₹150,000 at the beginning of each financial year for 15 years at an interest rate of 8.2% p.a.

Step 1: Calculate Total Outflow Over 15 Years

Total Outflow = ₹150,000 * 15 Years = ₹2,250,000

Step 2: Calculate Compounding for 15 Deposit Years + 6 Holding Years

Interest compounds annually on deposits made in Years 1–15 and continues earning 8.2% annual compound interest during Years 16–21 without fresh deposits.

Step 3: Evaluate Final 21-Year Maturity Value

Total Tax-Free Maturity Value = ₹6,929,790

Total Compound Interest Earned = ₹6,929,790 - ₹2,250,000 = ₹4,679,790

Result: Total deposits of ₹22.5 Lakhs yield a 100% tax-free maturity corpus of ₹69.30 Lakhs for the child’s future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can money be withdrawn before 21 years for higher education?

Yes. Partial withdrawal of up to 50% of the accumulated balance is permitted after the girl child reaches 18 years of age (or passes 10th standard) to fund higher education expenses.

What happens if a parent fails to deposit the minimum ₹250 in a financial year?

If the minimum ₹250 deposit is missed, the account is categorized as “defaulted.” It can be reactivated anytime before 15 years by paying a nominal penalty fee of ₹50 per defaulted year plus the minimum ₹250 deposit.

Is SSY interest taxable?

How many SSY accounts can be opened per family?

A family can open a maximum of two SSY accounts (one for each girl child). An exception is granted allowing a third account in the case of twin or triplet girls born in subsequent births.
