Unlike standard base-10 decimal numbers, calculating elapsed time requires handling a base-60 sexagesimal system for minutes and seconds, a 24-hour day boundary, and variable calendar month lengths. Adding or subtracting hours, minutes, and seconds by hand frequently causes calculation errors when carrying or borrowing values across these non-decimal units.

Our free online Time Calculator provides a complete suite of time calculation tools in one interface:

  • Add / Subtract Time: Add or subtract days, hours, minutes, and seconds from any starting time duration.
  • Time Duration & Difference: Calculate the exact elapsed time between two clock times (including cross-midnight shifts).
  • Date & Time Offset: Add or subtract specific durations from calendar dates and timestamps.
  • Work Hours & Timesheets: Compute billable shift hours, decimal time, and break deductions for payroll.

How to Add and Subtract Time (Base-60 Math)

Because time operates on a base-60 system (60 seconds = 1 minute, 60 minutes = 1 hour), you cannot add time like normal decimal numbers. You must sum the smallest units first, then carry any remainder over 60 into the next largest unit. When subtracting, you borrow 60 from the next higher unit rather than 10.

1. Addition Example: 2 Hours 45 Minutes + 1 Hour 35 Minutes

Math Step Calculation Logic Result
Step 1 (Sum Minutes) Add minutes directly: 45m + 35m 80 minutes
Step 2 (Carry Base-60) Since 80 ≥ 60, divide by 60: 80 - 60 = 20m (carry 1 hour) 1 hr carried, 20m remainder
Step 3 (Sum Hours) Add base hours + carried hour: 2h + 1h + 1h 4 hours
FINAL TOTAL 2h 45m + 1h 35m 4 Hours and 20 Minutes (4.333 hrs)

2. Subtraction Example: 5 Hours 15 Minutes − 2 Hours 45 Minutes

Math Step Calculation Logic Result
Step 1 (Check Minutes) 15m is smaller than 45m; you cannot subtract directly. Borrow 1 hour (60 minutes) from 5h.
Step 2 (Adjust Units) 5h 15m becomes 4h + (15m + 60m) = 4h 75m 4 Hours 75 Minutes
Step 3 (Subtract) Subtract minutes: 75m - 45m = 30m; Subtract hours: 4h - 2h = 2h 2h 30m
FINAL TOTAL 5h 15m - 2h 45m 2 Hours and 30 Minutes (2.50 hrs)

Minutes to Decimal Hours Conversion Table (For Payroll & Billing)

Converting minutes into decimal format is required for calculating employee wages, billable client hours, and overtime payroll. Use this quick reference lookup table:

Minutes (min) Decimal Hour (Exact) Minutes (min) Decimal Hour (Exact) Minutes (min) Decimal Hour (Exact)
1 min 0.0167 hr 21 min 0.3500 hr 41 min 0.6833 hr
5 min 0.0833 hr 25 min 0.4167 hr 45 min 0.7500 hr (¾ hr)
10 min 0.1667 hr 30 min 0.5000 hr (½ hr) 50 min 0.8333 hr
15 min 0.2500 hr (¼ hr) 35 min 0.5833 hr 55 min 0.9167 hr
20 min 0.3333 hr 40 min 0.6667 hr 60 min 1.0000 hr

Practical Time Calculation Examples

Calculating Work Hours & Timesheet Durations

To calculate total working hours for a work shift:

  1. Subtract the shift start time from the shift end time.
  2. Subtract any unpaid break durations (such as a 30-minute or 1-hour lunch break).
  3. Convert the remaining minutes to decimal format to multiply by the hourly wage.

Example: An employee clocks in at 8:30 AM, clocks out at 5:15 PM, and takes a 45-minute unpaid lunch:

  • Total shift span: 5:15 PM - 8:30 AM = 8 hours 45 minutes
  • Deduct 45-minute lunch: 8 hours 45 minutes - 45 minutes = 8 hours 00 minutes
  • Total paid work duration = 8.00 billable hours

Overnight Shifts Crossing Midnight

When a work shift crosses midnight (such as starting at 10:00 PM and finishing at 6:30 AM), add 24 hours to the end time:

  • Formula: (End Time + 24 Hours) - Start Time
  • Calculation: (6:30 AM + 24h = 30:30) - 22:00 = 8 hours 30 minutes (8.50 hours)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do you add 45 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes?

Add the minutes together: 30m + 45m = 75m. Since 75 minutes is 1 hour and 15 minutes, carry the 1 hour over to the 2 hours: 2h + 1h = 3 hours. The final result is 3 hours and 15 minutes (3.25 decimal hours).

How do I convert minutes into decimal hours for payroll?

Divide the number of minutes by 60. For example: 15 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.25 hours; 30 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.50 hours; 45 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.75 hours.

How do you calculate the elapsed time between 9:15 AM and 4:45 PM?

First, convert to 24-hour time: 9:15 AM is 09:15 and 4:45 PM is 16:45. Subtract the start time from the end time: 16:45 - 09:15 = 7 hours and 30 minutes (7.50 hours).

Why is time divided into 60 minutes and 60 seconds instead of decimals?

Modern time divisions derive from the ancient Babylonian sexagesimal (base-60) numerical system. 60 is a highly composite number with 12 factors (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, 60), allowing an hour to be divided evenly into halves, thirds, quarters, and fifths without fractional remainders.
