What is a Time Zone? GMT vs. UTC
A time zone is a geographical region on Earth that observes a uniform standard time for legal, commercial, and social purposes. Traditionally, time zones were dictated by local solar time, but modern infrastructure requires a standardized baseline:
- Greenwich Mean Time (GMT): The mean solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London, situated at exactly zero degrees longitude. GMT was historically used as the primary time standard, but it is now classified strictly as a time zone observed by parts of Western Europe and Africa.
- Coordinated Universal Time (UTC): The modern civil time standard used as the basis for time zones worldwide. UTC is regulated by highly precise atomic clocks (International Atomic Time) and adjusted occasionally with leap seconds to account for variations in the Earth’s rotation.

Standard Offsets and Longitude Math
Because the Earth rotates 360 degrees on its axis every 24 hours, the planet is geographically divided into 24 standard longitudinal zones. Dividing 360 degrees by 24 hours yields exactly 15 degrees of longitude per hour of time difference.
Standard time zones are expressed as positive or negative offsets relative to UTC, ranging from UTC-12:00 to UTC+14:00. While most zones differ by whole hours, political boundaries have introduced fractional offset variations:

DST is primarily observed across North America and Europe. It is generally not observed near the Equator, where daylight remains relatively constant throughout the year. U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the state of Hawaii do not observe DST.
