Calculating Horsepower Based on Physical Work

By definition, power is the rate at which energy is expended to move an object over a distance. The mathematical equation for power is:

Power = (Force × Distance) ÷ Time

The Origin of Horsepower and the Watt

Developed by Scottish engineer James Watt in the late 18th century, the term “horsepower” was coined to compare the output of early steam engines to the pulling capacity of draft horses. James Watt estimated that a mill horse could perform 33,000 foot-pounds of work per minute, a benchmark that remains the standard for mechanical horsepower today.

Watts and Kilowatts

The standard SI unit of power is the Watt (W), named in honor of James Watt. One Watt is defined as one Joule per second.

Watts are typically used to measure low-power electronics, while kilowatts (kW) rate home appliances, and kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure total energy consumption on utility bills.

A British Thermal Unit (BTU) is another energy unit, representing the heat energy required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. One BTU is equivalent to approximately 0.293 Watt-hours or 1,055 Joules.
