What factors influence how fast BAC rises?

Your BAC is determined by several physiological variables, including body weight (smaller individuals have less blood volume to dilute the alcohol), gender (women have lower amounts of water and dehydrogenase enzymes), muscle-to-fat ratio (muscle absorbs alcohol, while fat does not), and whether you have eaten (food delays gastric emptying, slowing alcohol absorption).

How fast does the body clear alcohol?

On average, the human liver metabolizes alcohol at a rate of approximately 0.015% BAC per hour (roughly one standard drink per hour). This clearance rate is constant and cannot be accelerated by drinking coffee, taking cold showers, or exercising. Only time will lower your BAC.

What is the difference between breath alcohol and blood alcohol?

Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) measures the actual percentage of ethanol in the blood. Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC) measures the concentration of evaporated alcohol exhaled from the lungs. Breathalyzers measure BrAC and convert it to estimated BAC using a standard partition ratio of 2,100:1.

Why do carbonated drinks increase BAC faster?

Carbonation (carbon dioxide gas) increases the pressure inside your stomach, forcing the pyloric valve between your stomach and small intestine to open sooner. Because the small intestine has a massive surface area and absorbs alcohol much faster than the stomach, carbonated alcoholic beverages lead to a quicker spike in BAC.
