Subcutaneous vs. Visceral Fat: Health Implications

Body fat is classified into two physiological types:

  1. Essential Fat: The minimum fat required for neurological function, joint cushioning, hormone regulation, and reproductive health. Dropping below essential fat levels (less than 10% for women, 2% for men) is highly dangerous and requires medical supervision.
  2. Storage Fat: Fat accumulated in adipose tissue. This is further split into subcutaneous fat (located directly under the skin, which provides insulation) and visceral fat (located deep within the abdominal cavity, wrapped around vital organs).

Excess visceral fat is highly pathogenic. It releases inflammatory cytokines directly into the portal vein, leading to higher low-density lipoprotein (LDL/”bad”) cholesterol, lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL/”good”) cholesterol, insulin resistance, and a heightened risk of cardiovascular disease, strokes, and Type II diabetes.


How to Measure and Calculate Body Fat Percentage

To use the U.S. Navy Method (developed at the Naval Health Research Center by Hodgdon and Beckett in 1984), take the following tape measurements to the nearest 1/4 inch (0.5 cm):

  • Neck: Measure below the larynx, sloping the tape slightly downward to the front. Avoid flaring your neck muscles.
  • Waist: Measure horizontally around the navel for men; measure at the narrowest width of the abdomen for women. Do not suck in your stomach.
  • Hips (Women Only): Measure horizontally around the widest part of the gluteal/hip region.

Using US Customary (USC) units (inches), the U.S. Navy equations are solved as follows:

Males: BFP = 86.010 × log10(Waist – Neck) – 70.041 × log10(Height) + 36.76
Females: BFP = 163.205 × log10(Waist + Hip – Neck) – 97.684 × log10(Height) – 78.387

  • Adult Males: BFP = 1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × Age – 16.2
  • Adult Females: BFP = 1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × Age – 5.4
  • Boys: BFP = 1.51 × BMI – 0.70 × Age – 2.2
  • Girls: BFP = 1.51 × BMI – 0.70 × Age + 1.4
