History of Measurement Systems: From Barley Grains to the Metre

1. History of the Pound and Avoirdupois System

In 8th-century Arab civilization, coins were used as standard weight units because minted coins could not easily be shaved without detection. The silver dirhem served as the baseline weight, equal to 45 barley grains. Ten dirhems formed a Wukryeh, translated into Latin as uncia—the origin of the modern word “ounce.”

As Mediterranean trade reached Europe, 16 ounces of silver (7,200 grains) became the standard pound. In England, a silver shortage led King Offa to establish a 5,400-grain pound for minting coins. By the 16th century under Queen Elizabeth I, England adopted the Avoirdupois weight system (from French avoir de pois, meaning “goods of weight”). The Avoirdupois pound was fixed at 7,000 grains (16 ounces of 437.5 grains each). In 1959, English-speaking nations internationally standardized 1 Avoirdupois pound as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms.

2. History of the Metric System

In 1668, John Wilkins proposed a decimal measurement system linked to a 1-second pendulum. In 1790, French statesman Talleyrand approached Thomas Jefferson (US) and John Riggs-Miller (UK) to establish a international decimal standard. Although Jefferson presented a decimal proposal to the US Congress, it was not adopted. France proceeded independently, defining the metric system in French law in 1795 and officially adopting it in 1799 based on a ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole.

By 1875, the Treaty of the Metre established the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM).
