The EPF Calculator (Employees’ Provident Fund Calculator) is an essential retirement planning tool for salaried employees across India. Managed by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), EPF is a government-backed savings scheme that accumulates compound interest on monthly contributions made by both employees and employers.
Whether you are starting your career, evaluating annual salary hikes, or planning for early retirement, this calculator computes your exact monthly contributions, annual interest earnings, and final lump-sum maturity corpus at age 58.
The EPF Contribution & Interest Formula
EPF contributions are determined as a fixed percentage of an employee’s Basic Salary + Dearness Allowance (DA):
1. Employee Contribution
Employee Contribution = 12% of (Basic Salary + DA)
2. Employer Contribution Breakdown
The employer contributes an equal 12%, which is split into two components:
- Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS): 8.33% of Basic Salary (capped at ₹1,250/month based on ₹15,000 wage ceiling).
- EPF Account: Remaining 3.67% of Basic Salary (plus any balance above the EPS cap).
3. Monthly Interest Accrual
Interest declared by EPFO (currently 8.25% p.a.) is calculated on the monthly running balance and credited to the account annually at the end of the financial year.
EPF Maturity Corpus Benchmark Table
The table below presents estimated retirement corpus accumulated at age 58 across different starting ages (assuming ₹30,000 Initial Basic Salary, 5% annual salary increment, and 8.25% EPFO Interest Rate):
| Current Age | Retirement Age | Monthly Employee Cont. (Yr 1) | Total Outflow (Self + Employer) | Maturity EPF Corpus (₹) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 Years | 58 Years (33 yrs) | ₹3,600 | ₹34,58,000 | ₹1,32,45,000 (1.32 Cr) |
| 30 Years | 58 Years (28 yrs) | ₹3,600 | ₹25,24,000 | ₹78,92,000 (78.9 Lakhs) |
| 35 Years | 58 Years (23 yrs) | ₹3,600 | ₹17,82,000 | ₹45,10,000 (45.1 Lakhs) |
| 40 Years | 58 Years (18 yrs) | ₹3,600 | ₹11,92,000 | ₹24,30,000 (24.3 Lakhs) |
Step-by-Step EPF Monthly Calculation Example
Consider an employee with a Monthly Basic Salary of ₹40,000.
Step 1: Calculate Employee EPF Contribution (12%)
Employee Contribution = ₹40,000 * 0.12 = ₹4,800 / month
Step 2: Calculate Employer EPS & EPF Contribution
EPS Contribution (8.33% capped at ₹15,000 wage ceiling) = ₹15,000 * 0.0833 = ₹1,250 / month
Employer EPF Contribution = (12% of ₹40,000) - ₹1,250 = ₹4,800 - ₹1,250 = ₹3,550 / month
Step 3: Sum Total Monthly Addition to EPF Account
Total Monthly Deposit = Employee (£4,800) + Employer EPF (£3,550) = ₹8,350 / month
Step 4: Apply Annual Interest Rate (8.25%)
Monthly Interest Rate = 8.25% / 12 = 0.6875% per month, accrued monthly on the running balance and compounded annually.
Result: ₹8,350 is added to the employee’s EPF balance each month, earning compound interest until retirement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is EPF interest completely tax-free?
Interest earned on EPF contributions is tax-free provided your continuous service is 5 years or longer. However, effective FY 2021-22, interest on employee contributions exceeding ₹2.5 Lakhs per year is taxable as income from other sources.

When can I withdraw my EPF balance?
Full EPF withdrawal is permitted upon reaching retirement age (58 years) or after being unemployed for 2 continuous months. Partial withdrawals are permitted for specific life events, such as home buying, medical emergencies, or child higher education.
