The Moratorium Calculator is a specialized credit tool designed to help borrowers evaluate the financial impact of taking a loan repayment holiday (moratorium). While a moratorium grants temporary relief by deferring monthly EMI payments, interest continues to accrue on the outstanding principal balance throughout the deferral period.

Whether evaluating home loans, personal loans, or vehicle financing, this calculator reveals how capitalization of accrued interest increases your total loan interest cost or extends your remaining loan tenure.

The Moratorium Accrual & Tenure Formula

During a loan moratorium, interest is charged continuously on the unpaid principal balance:

1. Interest Accrued During Moratorium

Accrued Moratorium Interest = Outstanding Principal * (Annual Rate / 12 / 100) * Moratorium Months

2. Capitalized Outstanding Balance

New Principal = Original Outstanding Principal + Accrued Moratorium Interest

3. Post-Moratorium Options

  • Option A (Extend Tenure): Maintain original monthly EMI amount, extending total loan tenure by extra months to absorb accrued interest.
  • Option B (Increase EMI): Maintain original loan tenure end date, increasing the monthly EMI payment amount to pay off the capitalized principal.

Moratorium Financial Impact Benchmark Table

The table below presents additional interest costs and tenure extension for a ₹3,000,000 (₹30 Lakhs) Home Loan at 8.5% annual interest taking a 3-Month Moratorium at various remaining tenures:

Remaining Tenure Original EMI (₹) 3-Month Accrued Interest (₹) New EMI (Same Tenure) Tenure Extension (Same EMI)
10 Years (120 mos) ₹37,190 ₹63,750 ₹37,980 (+₹790/mo) +3 Months
15 Years (180 mos) ₹29,542 ₹63,750 ₹30,170 (+₹628/mo) +5 Months
20 Years (240 mos) ₹26,035 ₹63,750 ₹26,588 (+₹553/mo) +8 Months

Step-by-Step Moratorium Impact Calculation Example

A borrower has an outstanding personal loan balance of ₹500,000 at 12.0% annual interest with 36 months remaining, and opts for a 6-month loan moratorium.

Step 1: Calculate Monthly Interest Rate

r = 12.0 / 12 / 100 = 0.01 per month

Step 2: Calculate Accrued Interest During 6 Months

Accrued Interest = ₹500,000 * 0.01 * 6 months = ₹30,000

Step 3: Calculate Capitalized Principal

New Principal Balance = ₹500,000 + ₹30,000 = ₹530,000

Step 4: Recalculate Post-Moratorium Monthly EMI

Original EMI on ₹500k for 36 months = ₹16,607.

New EMI on ₹530k for remaining 30 months = ₹20,539 per month.

Result: Taking a 6-month moratorium increases total loan cost by ₹30,000 and raises monthly installments by ₹3,932 per month over the remaining tenure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a loan moratorium mean loan forgiveness or interest waiver?

No. A moratorium is merely a temporary deferral of repayment schedules, not a waiver. Interest continues to accrue every month during the moratorium window and must be repaid later.

Will opting for a moratorium harm my CIBIL credit score?

Opting for a formal bank-approved moratorium does not count as a default or non-payment, and lenders do not report it as a negative event on your credit bureau (CIBIL) score.

Should I opt for a loan moratorium if I have sufficient cash flow?

If you have adequate cash flow or emergency savings, it is financially wiser to continue paying regular EMIs. Taking a moratorium increases your total compound interest liability significantly over time.

Can I prepay the accrued moratorium interest in a lump sum?

Yes. Many banks allow borrowers to pay off the accumulated moratorium interest as a single lump-sum payment immediately after the deferral period ends, preventing loan tenure expansion or EMI increases.
