How to Order Decimals by Hand

If you are taking a math test without a calculator, the most foolproof way to compare decimals is the “Line Up the Dots” method. Here is the step-by-step process taught in classrooms worldwide.

How do you order negative decimals?

Ordering negative decimals feels entirely backwards. With positive numbers, 0.9 is larger than 0.1. However, with negative numbers, -0.9 is actually smaller than -0.1. Imagine a thermometer: a temperature of -0.9 degrees is much colder (lower) than a temperature of -0.1 degrees. Therefore, a massive negative decimal is mathematically tiny.

Is 0.7 bigger than 0.69?

Yes. This is a classic test trap. Students see the “69” and think it is bigger than a solitary “7”. However, if you add a trailing zero to make them the same length, you are actually comparing 0.70 to 0.69. Seventy is clearly larger than sixty-nine, making 0.7 the larger decimal.

Does the number of digits before the decimal matter?
