The Core Percentage Formula

Although percentages can be phrased in different ways, they are fundamentally governed by a simple three-variable algebraic equation:

P × V1 = V2

Where:

  • P: The percentage (expressed as a decimal during manual calculations).
  • V1: The base value that the percentage modifies.

To convert a ratio or fraction to a percentage, divide the numerator by the denominator and multiply the result by 100. For example, if 25 out of 50 students in a classroom are male:
