Stair Terminology and Building Code Standards

Stair construction is governed by building codes (typically based on the International Residential Code or IRC). Below is a summary of the core terms and standard residential code limits:

  • Run / Tread: The horizontal surface you step on. Tread length is measured from the outer edge (including the nosing overhang) to the face of the vertical riser. Note that when calculating the total run of a staircase, the final tread flush with the upper landing is excluded. Under common building codes, treads must have a minimum length of 10 inches (25.4 cm).
  • Rise / Riser: The vertical height of a step. Riser height is measured from the top surface of one tread to the top surface of the next tread, which accounts for tread thickness. The number of risers determines the actual step count. Residential codes generally require a maximum riser height of 7.75 inches (19.7 cm).
  • Nosing: The front edge of the tread that overhangs the riser below. Nosing increases foot space to improve safety. If present, codes suggest a minimum nosing length of 0.75 inches (1.9 cm) and a maximum of 1.25 inches (3.2 cm).
  • Headroom: The vertical clearance measured from the front edge of the tread to the ceiling directly above. Codes require extra headroom to accommodate moving furniture. The standard minimum requirement is 6 feet 8 inches (203.2 cm) of vertical clearance.
  • Stair Width: The horizontal width of the steps, measured perpendicular to the run. This does not include handrails. Residential codes generally require a minimum width of 36 inches (91.44 cm).
  • Handrails and Guards: Handrails provide stability when walking, while guards prevent falls from elevated edges. Guards are required for stairways with a total rise exceeding 30 inches. Handrails must sit between 34 and 38 inches high, and guards must stand at least 34 inches tall, measured vertically from the front edge of the treads. Handrail grip diameters must be between 1.25 and 2.675 inches.
  • Stringer: The structural support board (typically three: left, right, and center) that supports the treads and risers. Stringers can be cut to form the step shape or remain uncut to hide the tread edges.
  • Door Swing: Doors are not permitted to swing over stairs. The arc of any door must swing completely onto a landing or flat floor surface.

What is the standard rise and run for residential stairs?

The standard residential recommendation is a maximum rise of 7.75 inches and a minimum run of 10 inches. A common rule of thumb for comfortable steps is the “7-11 rule” (7-inch riser and 11-inch tread) where layout conditions permit.

How do I calculate the number of steps needed for my total rise?

To find the step count, divide your total vertical rise by your target riser height (typically 7 to 7.5 inches). Round the result to the nearest whole number to find the number of risers. Then divide the total rise by this whole number to find the exact riser height for each step.

For example, if your total rise is 100 inches: 100 ÷ 7.25 = 13.79 (round up to 14 risers).

Your exact riser height will be: 100 ÷ 14 = 7.14 inches.

Why is nosing important on steps?

Nosing extends the usable landing width of each tread without increasing the physical run length of the staircase. This gives users extra foot space when walking down the stairs, reducing the risk of slipping.

When do I need guards on a staircase?

Under IRC rules, guards are required on any elevated walking surface—including stairways—that rises more than 30 inches above the floor or ground below. These guards must stand at least 34 inches tall to prevent accidental falls.
