A Call Option gives an investor the right, but not the obligation, to purchase 100 shares of an underlying stock or security at a specified strike price before or on a set expiration date. Calculating call option potential profits, losses, and breakeven stock prices is essential for evaluating long call trades and managing downside risk.

Our free Call Option Calculator computes your total contract purchase cost, breakeven stock price, dollar profit/loss at expiration, and return on investment (ROI).

How to Calculate Call Option Profit and Breakeven

Evaluating a call option requires determining the total premium invested and comparing the underlying stock market price at expiration against the strike price.

The Call Option Breakeven Formula:

Breakeven Price = Strike Price + Option Premium Paid

The Call Option Profit/Loss Formulas:

Gross Payoff at Expiration = MAX( 0, Stock Price at Expiration - Strike Price ) × Number of Contracts × 100

Net Profit / Loss = Gross Payoff - Total Premium Paid

Sub-Formula Components:

  • Strike Price: The predetermined contractual price at which you can buy the underlying stock.
  • Option Premium: The price per share paid to purchase the option contract (1 contract = 100 shares).
  • Total Investment (Cost): Premium per Share × 100 × Number of Contracts
  • Maximum Loss: Capped strictly at the total premium paid to enter the position.
  • Maximum Profit: Theoretically unlimited as the underlying stock price rises.

Call Option Payoff & Profit Scenarios

The table below illustrates net profit and return on investment (ROI) at expiration for a single Call Option contract with a $100 Strike Price bought for a $5.00 Premium ($500 Total Cost):

Stock Price at Expiration Intrinsic Value per Share Net Dollar Profit / Loss Return on Investment (ROI)
$90.00 (Below Strike) $0.00 -$500.00 (Max Loss) -100.0%
$100.00 (At Strike) $0.00 -$500.00 -100.0%
$105.00 (Breakeven Point) $5.00 $0.00 (Breakeven) 0.0%
$115.00 (In the Money) $15.00 +$1,000.00 +200.0%
$130.00 (Deep In the Money) $30.00 +$2,500.00 +500.0%

Step-by-Step Calculation Example

An investor purchases 2 Call Option contracts on ABC Stock with the following details:

  • Strike Price: $50.00
  • Option Premium Paid: $3.50 per share
  • Number of Contracts: 2 contracts (200 shares)
  • Stock Price at Expiration: $62.00

Step 1: Compute Total Capital Invested

Total Cost = $3.50 × 200 shares = $700.00

Step 2: Calculate Breakeven Stock Price

Breakeven Price = $50.00 + $3.50 = $53.50

Step 3: Calculate Gross Intrinsic Value at Expiration

Intrinsic Value = ( $62.00 - $50.00 ) × 200 shares = $12.00 × 200 = $2,400.00

Step 4: Calculate Net Profit and ROI

Net Profit = $2,400.00 - $700.00 = $1,700.00

ROI = ( $1,700.00 / $700.00 ) × 100 = 242.86%
