The Four Components of TDEE
Your daily energy expenditure is comprised of four distinct physiological pathways:
1. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) – ~60-75% of TDEE
BMR is the rate of energy expenditure when your body is completely at rest in a temperate environment with an inactive digestive system (typically requiring a 12-hour fast). It represents the minimum energy required to keep your vital organs—such as your brain, heart, kidneys, and lungs—functioning. BMR forms the foundation of your daily metabolic output.
2. Thermic Effect of Activity (TEA) – ~5-15% of TDEE
TEA represents the calories burned during deliberate, structured exercise, such as weightlifting, running, cycling, or playing sports. It scales directly with the intensity and duration of your training sessions.
3. Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) – ~15% of TDEE
NEAT comprises the energy expended for all physical movement that is not sleeping, eating, or sports-like exercise. This includes walking to your car, typing on a keyboard, washing dishes, fidgeting, and standing. NEAT is a highly variable component of TDEE that changes based on occupational demands.
4. Thermic Effect of Food (TEF) – ~10% of TDEE
Also known as specific dynamic action, TEF is the energy required by your body to digest, absorb, transport, and store nutrients from the food you eat. It is generally estimated as 10% of your daily caloric intake. However, TEF varies significantly by macronutrient type:
- Protein: Has the highest thermic effect, requiring 20% to 30% of its own caloric energy to process.
- Carbohydrates: Require 5% to 15% of their energy to digest.
- Fats: Require very little energy to process, ranging from 0% to 3%.
How TDEE is Calculated: BMR Equations & Multipliers
TDEE calculations begin with an estimation of your BMR, using physical traits like age, gender, height, and weight. The calculator utilizes three primary clinical formulas:
- Mifflin-St Jeor Equation: The modern clinical standard, widely adopted for its high accuracy in estimating BMR for the general population.
- Harris-Benedict Equation: The classic formula, originally developed in 1919 and revised in 1984 to improve precision.
- Katch-McArdle Formula: Calculates Resting Daily Energy Expenditure (RDEE) by incorporating your lean body mass. This is the most accurate formula for leaner individuals and athletes who know their body fat percentage, as muscle tissue is far more metabolically active than fat.
Once your BMR is established, it is multiplied by a Physical Activity Level (PAL) factor to estimate TDEE:
- Sedentary (Little or no exercise): BMR x 1.2
- Light Activity (Exercise 1-3 times/week): BMR x 1.375
- Moderate Activity (Exercise 4-5 times/week): BMR x 1.55
- Active (Daily exercise or intense training 3-4 times/week): BMR x 1.725
- Very Active (Physical job or very intense exercise daily): BMR x 1.9

What is the difference between BMR and TDEE?
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns at rest to perform vital life-sustaining functions. Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is BMR plus the additional calories burned throughout the day through digestives demands (TEF), daily movement (NEAT), and structured exercise (TEA).
How does age affect TDEE?
TDEE naturally declines with age. This is primarily caused by a decrease in lean muscle mass (sarcopenia) as we age, which lowers our BMR. Additionally, general activity levels and daily movement tend to decrease as people age, reducing both TEA and NEAT.
Why does protein increase TDEE?
Protein has a high Thermic Effect of Food (TEF). Your body must expend up to 30% of the calories consumed from protein just to break down its complex peptide bonds into amino acids. Eating a higher-protein diet naturally increases your daily TEF, elevating your overall TDEE.
Is Katch-McArdle more accurate than Mifflin-St Jeor?
Yes, but only if you know your exact body fat percentage. Because Katch-McArdle uses lean body mass as its primary variable, it accounts for the higher metabolic rate of muscle tissue. If you do not know your body fat percentage, Mifflin-St Jeor is the more reliable estimation method.
