Why Do We Have Different Systems of Weight Measurement?

Historically, human societies developed weight standards based on localized physical objects:

  • Babylonian & Egyptian Seeds: Early civilizations measured weight using container capacity filled with plant seeds. The modern gemstone unit carat originates directly from the uniform mass of carob tree seeds.
  • Babylonian Talent: The Babylonians created the talent as a base weight unit, equal to the volume of water needed to fill an amphora vessel. Using their 60-based (sexagesimal) math system, the talent was divided into 60 minas.
  • Roman Uncia: The Romans introduced the uncia (meaning a twelfth part of a Roman pound or foot), which gave rise to both the English word ounce and inch.
  • Arab Silver Dirhem: In 8th-century Arab trade, a silver Dirhem was defined as the weight of 45 fully grown barley grains. Ten Dirhems formed a Wukryeh (450 grains).
  • English Silver Penny & Offa’s Pound: King Offa of Mercia (8th century) accepted the silver Dirhem but halved it to 22.5 grains for a silver penny. Twenty pennies made an ounce, and 12 ounces formed a 5,400-grain silver pound.
  • 1824 Act & 1855 Parliament Fire: The British Imperial System was formalized in the Weights and Measures Act of 1824. In 1855, a fire destroyed the Houses of Parliament in London where master weight standards were kept, prompting the creation of new physical prototype standards.
