When comparing the core operating performance of two competing companies, traditional Net Income can be misleading. Net Income includes the effects of capital structure (debt interest expense) and non-operating income. To measure how efficiently a company generates profit strictly from its core operations—assuming it had zero debt—corporate analysts use Net Operating Profit After Tax (NOPAT).

Our free NOPAT Calculator allows financial analysts, CFOs, and M&A teams to evaluate unlevered operational profitability. By adjusting Operating Income (EBIT) for taxes, you can analyze pure core earnings across businesses with different capital structures.

How to Calculate NOPAT

NOPAT isolates operating earnings by taking Earnings Before Interest and Taxes (EBIT) and applying the company’s effective tax rate.

The Primary NOPAT Formula:

NOPAT = Operating Income (EBIT) × (1 - Effective Tax Rate)

Alternative Formula (From Net Income):

NOPAT = Net Income + Net Interest Expense × (1 - Tax Rate)

  • EBIT (Operating Income): Gross Revenue minus Operating Expenses (COGS, SG&A, Depreciation).
  • Effective Tax Rate: The percentage of corporate income tax paid.

NOPAT vs. Net Income Comparison

Feature Net Income NOPAT
Includes Debt Interest Expense? Yes (Leveled after interest payouts). No (Unlevered operating metric).
Includes Non-Operating Income? Yes (Investment gains, asset sales). No (Strictly core business operations).
Primary Valuation Purpose Shareholder net earnings (P/E ratios). Free Cash Flow (FCFF) & EVA models.

Step-by-Step Corporate Example

Imagine evaluating a manufacturing firm with the following financial data:

  • Total Sales Revenue: $50,000,000
  • Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) & Operating Expenses: $38,000,000
  • Operating Income (EBIT): $12,000,000
  • Interest Expense on Corporate Debt: $2,000,000
  • Effective Corporate Tax Rate: 25% (0.25)

Let’s calculate NOPAT:

NOPAT = $12,000,000 × (1 - 0.25)

NOPAT = $12,000,000 × 0.75 = $9,000,000

The company generates $9,000,000 in Net Operating Profit After Tax. (Note: Net Income would only be $7,500,000 due to the $2M debt interest deduction).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why is NOPAT used in Free Cash Flow (FCFF) calculations?

Free Cash Flow to Firm (FCFF) measures cash available to all capital providers (both debt and equity holders). Because NOPAT represents unlevered operating profit after tax, it serves as the exact starting point for calculating FCFF: FCFF = NOPAT + D&A - CapEx - ΔNWC.

How is NOPAT used in Economic Value Added (EVA)?

Economic Value Added (EVA) measures true economic profit created above the cost of capital. The formula is: EVA = NOPAT - (Total Invested Capital × WACC).

Is NOPAT the same as Unlevered Net Income?

Yes. NOPAT and Unlevered Net Income refer to the exact same concept: operating earnings adjusted for income taxes assuming the firm operates with zero debt leverage.
