The PPF Calculator (Public Provident Fund Calculator) is an essential financial tool designed to calculate compound interest growth and total 15-year maturity wealth under the Government of India’s flagship small savings scheme. PPF is renowned for its EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) tax status, meaning contributions qualify for Section 80C tax deductions, interest earned is tax-free, and final maturity proceeds are 100% exempt from income tax.

Whether depositing annual lump-sum amounts or monthly contributions (up to ₹1.5 Lakhs per financial year), this calculator computes your exact year-by-year compounding balance.

The PPF Compound Interest Formula

Public Provident Fund interest is compounded annually using the compound interest formula for periodic annuities:

FV = P * [((1 + i)^n - 1) / i]

Where:

  • FV: Total PPF Maturity Corpus after 15 years.
  • P: Annual Contribution Amount (Minimum ₹500, Maximum ₹1,50,000 per financial year).
  • i: Annual Interest Rate (currently 7.1% p.a. set by the Ministry of Finance).
  • n: Number of Investment Years (standard initial lock-in period = 15 Years).

Note: Interest is calculated monthly based on the lowest balance held between the 5th and the last day of each month, credited annually on March 31st.

PPF 15-Year Maturity Corpus Benchmark Table

The table below presents total 15-year maturity wealth accumulated across various annual deposit amounts (at current 7.1% Annual Interest Rate):

Annual Deposit (₹) Monthly Equiv. Deposit (₹) Total 15-Yr Deposit (₹) Total Interest Earned (₹) 100% Tax-Free Maturity Value (₹)
₹12,000 / yr ₹1,000 / mo ₹180,000 ₹145,457 ₹325,457
₹60,000 / yr ₹5,000 / mo ₹900,000 ₹727,284 ₹1,627,284 (16.27 Lakhs)
₹100,000 / yr ₹8,333 / mo ₹1,500,000 ₹1,212,139 ₹2,712,139 (27.12 Lakhs)
₹150,000 / yr (Max) ₹12,500 / mo ₹2,250,000 ₹1,818,209 ₹4,068,209 (40.68 Lakhs)

Step-by-Step PPF Calculation Example

An investor deposits the maximum allowable ₹150,000 at the start of each financial year (on or before April 5th) for 15 years at an interest rate of 7.1% p.a.

Step 1: Calculate Total Outflow Over 15 Years

Total Invested Capital = ₹150,000 * 15 = ₹2,250,000

Step 2: Apply Annual Compound Interest Formula

FV = 150,000 * [((1 + 0.071)^15 - 1) / 0.071] = ₹4,068,209

Step 3: Calculate Compound Interest Earned

Total Interest = ₹4,068,209 - ₹2,250,000 = ₹1,818,209

Result: Deposits totaling ₹22.5 Lakhs accumulate a 100% tax-free maturity value of ₹40.68 Lakhs, generating ₹18.18 Lakhs in pure compound interest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is depositing on or before April 5th recommended for PPF?

Because monthly interest is calculated on the minimum balance between the 5th and last day of the month, depositing before the 5th ensures you earn interest for that entire month. Depositing before April 5th maximizes interest for the full financial year.

Can I extend my PPF account after 15 years?

Yes. Upon completion of the initial 15-year period, you can extend your PPF account indefinitely in blocks of 5 years, either with fresh annual contributions or without making further contributions.

Can I withdraw money from my PPF account before 15 years?

Partial withdrawals are permitted starting from the 7th financial year. Additionally, account holders can take loans against their PPF balance between the 3rd and 6th financial years at nominal interest rates.

Is PPF capital safe from court attachments or debt recovery?

Yes. Under the Public Provident Fund Act, funds held in a PPF account cannot be attached by any court of law under any decree or order regarding debts or liabilities.
