For disabled US military veterans, receiving monthly VA disability compensation is a crucial financial safety net. However, calculating your total combined disability rating is rarely a matter of simple addition. The Department of Veterans Affairs uses a unique non-additive system known as “VA Math” to calculate overall disability percentages.

Our free VA Disability Calculator eliminates confusion surrounding VA Math. By combining your individual service-connected disability ratings (e.g., 50% PTSD + 30% Tinnitus + 20% Back Pain), applying the bilateral factor where applicable, and factoring in dependents, you can determine your exact combined rating and monthly tax-free payout.

How “VA Math” Works (Combined Ratings)

The VA evaluates disabilities based on a veteran’s remaining “Whole Person Efficiency.” You start as a 100% healthy individual. Each disability percentage reduces your remaining efficiency rather than adding directly to your total score.

Step-by-Step VA Math Combined Rating Example

Imagine a veteran with three distinct service-connected disability ratings: 50%, 30%, and 20%. (Always sort ratings from highest to lowest first).

Disability Claim VA Math Calculation Remaining Efficiency
Starting Baseline 100% Whole Person 100% Healthy
1. First Rating (50%) 50% of 100% = 50% Disabled 50% Healthy Left
2. Second Rating (30%) 30% of remaining 50% = 15% Additional Disability 35% Healthy Left (65% Total)
3. Third Rating (20%) 20% of remaining 35% = 7% Additional Disability 28% Healthy Left (72% Total)
Final Rounded VA Rating 72% Combined Rating rounded to nearest 10% 70% Final Rating Tier

Instead of simple addition (50% + 30% + 20% = 100%), VA Math calculates an exact combined rating of 72%, which rounds down to a 70% official disability rating tier.

What is the VA Bilateral Factor?

If you have disabilities affecting both paired upper extremities (e.g., both elbows or wrists) or both paired lower extremities (e.g., both knees or ankles), the VA applies the Bilateral Factor. The combined rating for those paired disabilities is calculated first, and an additional 10% bonus multiplier is added to their combined rating before combining with non-bilateral conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Are VA disability payments taxable?

No. VA disability compensation payments are 100% tax-free at both federal and state levels. They do not need to be reported as earned income on your IRS tax returns.

Do dependents increase monthly VA disability pay?

Yes, but only if your combined disability rating is 30% or higher. Veterans rated at 30%+ receive additional monthly allowance increases for a spouse, dependent children, and dependent parents.

What is TDIU (Unemployability)?

TDIU (Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability) allows veterans who cannot maintain substantially gainful employment due to service-connected disabilities to be paid at the 100% disability compensation rate, even if their combined rating is under 100% (e.g., a single 60% rating or a combined 70% rating).
